Caution: Grooved Pavement: A Night Drive Becomes Something Else

What happens when a difficult nighttime drive becomes the starting point for both music and a future automobile commercial?

Caution: Grooved Pavement begins on a highway late at night in a rainstorm. Passing trucks, road noise and windshield wipers gradually become part of the musical world. A blues organ emerges from the roadway, funk motifs appear one by one, and strings introduce the central rhythm before giving way in part to a funk-band arrangement.

The accompanying video gradually reframes the journey as a futuristic automobile advertisement—and the music plays along with the idea. A deliberately retro television-commercial theme briefly interrupts the funk before the piece returns to its main musical direction.

For the finale, an electric piano takes the lead while the windshield presents an idealized virtual-reality version of the road ahead, in striking contrast to the conditions actually surrounding the car.

The video changes how we hear the music, while the music changes how we experience the drive.
